Summer Camps

8 – 15 Years

Canoe Kids is a fun-filled summer camp focused on all aspects of safe paddle sports. Campers aged 8-15 years old will be introduced to canoeing, kayaking, water safety, swimming, field sports as well as cooperative games and activities. In the event of inclement weather, activities will be restricted to land.

All canoes, kayaks, paddles and PFDs will be supplied for use during camp hours and each camper will get a free water bottle and sportpack with the club LOGO. Those who singed up for the summer long will get an additional GERCKC Summer Camp t-shirt!

Throughout the week, campers will explore Cardiff Lake with qualified instructors. Along with their peers, campers will have a great time challenging their own abilities while developing self-confidence and teamwork skills. We keep low ratios to ensure each participant enjoys an optimal summer camp experience.

Campers are required to wear a life jacket at all times while on the water.

Note: Canoe Kids is not an introduction to competitive sprint boats or regatta participation. If you are interested in sprint canoe and kayak. Please speak to one of the coaches about joining our Bantam racing team!

 

Camp Pre-Requisites:
  • Campers must be 8-15 years old during the camp session (exception can be made only for brothers and sisters if one of them is 7 and the other is older).
  • No paddling experience is required
  • CanoeKids participants must have minimum swim ability

Bantam Racing

10 – 14 Years

June through August, Monday through Friday. (detailed schedule will be communicated after registration)

Intro to Sprint canoe. This camp is focusing on the basics of kayak and canoe. Returning paddlers  will be introduced to the sprint canoe & kayak and have the opportunity to try singles and crew boats. The end of the camp the participants will travel to Calgary to participate in the Calgary invitational regatta. Racing shirts will be provided to all participants of camp. During the camp, the participants will be involved in games on and off the water, etc shark attack, relays and scavenger hunts.Water safety is also focussed on for each individual must demonstrate how to tip and swim you boat to shore or to safety boat, (Tip, turn and tow). Each participant will learn and demonstrate canoe over canoe.

Cost: $350.00
Participants will take part in the Telford Lake Bantam Beginner Regatta in August (3rd week). Selected athletes will be also invited to participate at the “Westerns championships” in Calgary).

High Performance

15+ years

The Greater Edmonton Canoe Kayak Club offers a 6-month on water sprint racing program for the development of competitive sprint athletes. The program is open to paddlers 14 years and older who have demonstrated a high commitment level and the potential to compete at the national level.

 

The sprint racing program includes the development of a personalized training program which incorporates short and long term objectives. The program includes:

• minimum 8-10 training sessions per week

• personalized on water instruction and coaching

• stroke analysis through on-water coaching and video analysis

• personalized physical conditioning program

• dry-land training which may include agility, strength, speed and endurance training

 

On-water training begins around May 1st and continues through to October. In October, the focus switches to dry-land training and conditioning programs: running, skiing, swimming, weight training and other fitness activities. Team members planning to compete for spots on the provincial and national teams will usually attend spring training camps in the US and Europe.

Pool Paddling

Time: 8 – 9 pm

Pool Paddling provide a superb resource for introducing people to Paddlesport and provide opportunities for paddlers to develop their skills and experience in a comfortable, safe, and easily managed environment, unaffected by seasonal weather conditions. Paddlesport by its very nature is diverse.The swimming pool environment is ideally suited to enabling enthusiastes of all ages and persuasions to benefit from easy access to water and making the most of their leisure time, particularly throughout the winter months.

 

Core Training and Climbing

U11/U13/U15 (ages 9-14) Paddlers and Masters 25+

Time: 10 – 12 am

Core exercises are an important part of a well-rounded fitness program. Aside from occasional situps and pushups, however, core exercises are very important for canoe kayak sport. Still, it pays to get your core muscles — the muscles around your trunk and pelvis — in better shape.

 

Swimming Program

U11/U13/U15 (ages 9-14) Paddlers and Masters 25+
Location: Fountain Park Pool, St.Albert
Time: 6 – 7 am
Swimming is an excellent way to improve cardiorespiratory fitness levels and build upper body strength/endurance. This Tuesday only swimming program is geared to the paddlers who are joining the Bantam Group and it is also open to Masters paddlers. The focus will be on improving fitness and stroke technique.

 

XC Skiing
